No loss in trade since Port Talbot explosion
Steel giant Corus is rebuilding the blast furnace that was severely damaged in last years explosion at its Port Talbot works. The explosion killed three workers and left five critically injured.
The new furnace, which is expected to be complete and ready for work by January 2003, will have an iron output of 1.5 million tonnes per year. Together with its other blast furnace, Port Talbot will have an annual iron output of some 4.4 million tonnes.
The cost of the reconstruction is estimated to be around £75 million.
Since the incident on November 8, Corus continued to meet the demands of its customers by calling on production from its other blast furnace at Port Talbot and its plants in the Netherlands.
However, Corus spokesman Mike Hitchcock told The Manufacturer that the company would have to buy-in steel slabs during the rebuild at Port Tallbot. He said: "One of the Netherlands plants is also about to undergo reconstruction and therefore we have already ordered in steel slabs from other suppliers to meet the demands of the first quarter of 2002."
Despite some 6000 job cuts throughout Corus' last year, no redundancies were made as a direct result of the Port Talbot explosion. Mr Hitchcock said that workers on the damaged furnace had been deployed in other areas of the plant. Many workers were placed on training schemes and over-time levels were cut significantly.
