BAE Systems announced today that consultation will begin regarding 642 potential job losses across eight UK sites in its Integrated System Technologies (Insyte) business.
The latest job losses take the total of posts cut at the defence group to almost 2,300 for the year, as it faces a shrinking pipeline of work. BAE Systems Insyte currently employs 3719 people across 11 UK-based sites in the delivery of radar surveillance, command & information systems, mission training and underwater systems solutions to UK and overseas defence and security customers.
Managing Director for BAE Systems Insyte, Rory Fisher, said: “We have a responsibility to address a reduction in our forecast workload and manage our cost base to remain competitive and meet our customers' future requirements.
“We will work with our employees and their representatives to explore ways of mitigating these potential job losses and we will ensure employees are fully supported throughout this process.”
One such representative, the Confederation of Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions’ general secretary, Hugh Scullion, said: “The staff at Insyte produce cutting-edge technology — these are highly skilled jobs which the UK can not afford to lose.”
The proposed headcount of 2010/11 job losses is as follows:
Broad Oak, Portsmouth — 220
Chelmsford, Essex — 86
Christchurch, Dorset — 23
Cowes, Isle of White — 125
Filton, Bristol — 10
Frimley, Surrey — 99
Hillend, Fife — 52
New Malden — 22
Others — 5
