Editorial Guide
Now in its 10th year, The Manufacturer is an essential tool that influences senior management in UK manufacturing.
The Manufacturer is a magazine for manufacturers about manufacturers. Its role is to stimulate and inform, and it provides readers with the knowledge and practical help they need to succeed.
These days, the people who run manufacturing businesses are busy, with little time for wide-scale reading. They need high quality, reliable and independent information and they need it delivered consistently and in a format that's vibrant, exciting, and quick to read. That's what the Manufacturer does. We make sure we are at the leading edge of manufacturing, staying in touch with manufacturers; innovating and driving change, not just reporting on what's happening.
The magazine contains a full front section of news and lively comment from our award-winning journalists which bring the month in manufacturing into sharp focus and there are topical interviews with manufacturing's leading figures. This is followed by practical advice and expert comment. We report in depth on all the main issues manufacturers face, within the framework of seven pillars of manufacturing wisdom. We talk to manufacturers about their pressing issues, speak to informed experts in the field, and showcase best practice in operation. Finally, our manufacturing in action section brings together the best manufacturing stories - how real manufacturers are succeeding in their businesses through the implementation of improved systems and processes, and forward thinking strategies against tough competition and in a difficult economic environment.

Editorial Coverage
| Leadership and strategy Beginning with the issues that impact at board level, we examine a wide range of strategic topics, from finance and accounting, corporate responsibility and company strategy through to the good leadership that will drive a company to success rather than failure. |
World class manufacturing Moving on to the process of manufacturing, many of the most effective production philosophies have come from Japan: lean manufacturing, TPM and six sigma, to name just a few. This section keeps readers up to date with the latest developments and concepts in the management of the lean and agile factory, and indeed in the unique custom-build environment. |
| Skills and Productivity Skilled and motivated people are more important now than they have ever been, and this section tackles some of the biggest people-based issues in today’s tough operating environment: recruiting, training and keeping staff, motivation, people management and successfully introducing change. |
Logistics & supply chain The continuing globalisation trend means that even the smallest manufacturer is looking to source parts and products from around the world. The challenge of building productive and reliable supplier relationships, removing waste from the supply chain and analysing and dealing with the carbon impact of global operations is increasingly occupying board attention. |
| Design and innovation In a world where it is infinitely cheaper to manufacture in low cost economies, UK manufacturers are carving their place through continuous innovation and great design. This ‘front end’ of the manufacturing process is critical, and best practice in this area is the differentiator that marks out the companies that will continue to compete successfully as the rapidly changing global marketplace evolves. |
IT in manufacturing IT is the glue that holds the company together, controls its operations and links it with customers and suppliers around the globe - a silent but essential information and management highway. Keeping abreast of the latest developments, and how they can be utilised to derive bottom line benefit, is key to the delivery of goods on time and to order. |
| Operations and Maintenance Drilling down to shopfloor level, this section of the magazine provides managers and directors with the latest ideas and information on how to keep the plant operating efficiently and reliably. Covering issues such as quality, maintenance, automation, health and safety and materials handling, it explains best practice and how improvements and cost saving can be achieved. |
Energy and environment Rocketing energy prices and the drive to limit climate change have made this one of today’s hot topics. We will be exploring how companies are cutting their carbon footprint, reducing their energy consumption, recycling waste, and purchasing energy and materials more wisely |
