Lotus leads the way with new eco model

Lotus has unveiled a new ‘Eco’ version of its popular Elise model, looking to improve all aspects of environmental performance and not just C02 emissions.
The new stripped down version is 32kgs lighter than the standard model, making for far greater fuel efficiency. But the Lotus engineering team has gone much further than simply cutting weight – a recognised measure adopted by many mainstream car manufacturers, most notably BMW. The roof incorporates solar panels to help power the electrical systems while a specially designed gear display alerts the driver as to the most efficient time to change gear.
Sustainable materials are used throughout the car, including locally produced hemp, sisal and biodegradable eco wool for the interior, and specially designed water-based paints to reduce solvent emissions and energy use for the exterior.
But it’s not just its cars that Lotus is looking to make more green. Last year, the car manufacturer reduced its electricity use by 14 per cent, its water use by 11 per cent and increased to 57 per cent the waste product recycled at its Norfolk-based headquarters.
