First Hybrid AD/IVC waste facility

BIO GROUP ANNOUNCES THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE FIRST HYBRID AD/IVC WASTE FACILITY AT HELMDON, NORTHANTS

Bio Group Ltd (‘Bio Group’ or ‘the Group’) the UK’s largest specialist organic waste business, today announces that it has obtained permission to develop the UK’s first hybrid AD/IVC (Anaerobic Digestion / In-Vessel Composting) facility at Helmdon, Northamptonshire. This new facility will more than double the existing output of the site and, with construction already underway, it will be completed by the end of January 2008.

This new hybrid facility will transform the basis for organic waste treatment in the UK, enabling both local authority household waste and merchant waste streams to be diverted from saturated landfills. The urgent demand from local authorities for additional resources to handle waste has been a major driving force behind the new facility.

The facility, which obtained planning permission in just 13 weeks having received no objections to its proposal, combines AD and IVC into one efficient operation. The facility, with a 30,000 tonnes per annum throughput, will generate renewable electricity as well as compost for agricultural use. The combination of the existing facility, together with the new innovative plant, will increase the processing of the entire site to over 50,000 tonnes per annum.

Helmdon, which has been designed as a local facility to solve local waste problems, will provide capacity for the recycling of organic waste from areas including Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Milton Keynes.

An interactive Education and Visitor Centre is also being constructed at the site, enabling any visitors, including parties of school children and other similar groups, to learn more about how the facility works and the benefits of recycling.

Commenting on the new facility, Steve Sharratt, Bio Group Chief Executive, said:

“We are delighted that we have obtained permission to develop this new facility. It shows the real importance of finding more efficient and environmentally friendly ways to deal with the increasing demands of waste. Finding a viable alternative to landfill sites is crucial in the battle to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fight against climate change. We look forward to working with our local community partners in the development of this exciting new project.”
