LMJ issue 05 steps up to step change.
The latest edition explores how lean thinking in design and innovation can define customer value, support effective creativity and bring competitive benefits.
According to recent research from LMJ board member Peter Hines 95% of lean implementation still focus exclusively on the order fulfilment process, failing to tap the potential of other processes like innovation and order creation. LMJ board member Bill Bellows opens the issue with insight into the links between Deming’s business theories and approaches to innovation.
Anticipating issue 06
Issue 06 of LMJ will be an education and training special. Content will explore the importance of learning in the growth of lean organisational culture and methodologies for creating training structures that foster sustainable improvement and real business results.
Articles in Issue 06 will include
Understanding Education: Gill Woodward, Constellation Wines Australia and Europe, explores the extent to which trainers in industry and business identify themselves as teachers and leverage knowledge around learning theory to ensure better returns on training investments.
Relentless Discovery: Steve Spear, MIT Sloan School of Management, discusses whether benefiting from complexity really means escalating risk. Reflecting on the major systems failures of recent years including those at Toyota and BP.
Lean Learning: Ben Salder, BAE Systems, describes the evolution of the BAE lean training programme. Sharing their journey from training lean to lean training and highlighting the scheme’s guiding principles.
A continuing theme in issue 06 will be the role of leadership in supporting these learning structures. The part to be played by organisational leaders in lean deployments is being hotly debated in many lean forums and the development of lean understanding at senior levels will be essential in altering the paradigms of leadership behaviours.
Many of the issues and challenges surrounding lean leadership will be discussed at LMJ’s Lean Directors Seminar on September 21. This event is now sold out but due to popular demand will be re-run in December. Contact Jon Tudor at j.tudor@saonemedia.com for further details on this second opportunity to share in valuable cross-sector, executive level debate.
