US Steel Corporation and the United Steelworkers of America have consented to begin negotiations on a labor deal regarding union workers at National Steel Corp.
An agreement between National Steel’s 8,200 employees and US Steel’s 12,000 union workers would give the leading US steelmaker an advantage in the bidding war with AK Steel. AK Steel was named a leading bidder for National Steel by a federal bankruptcy judge in Chicago last week, which is a much sought-after distinction when bidding to take over a company. However, National Steel retains the right to reject an AK Steel offer if a deal cannot be reached with the union by March 17.
