The Commerce Department stated that total US steel imports in 2002 increased 8.4% from 2001.
The number of blooms, hot rolled sheets, and billets and slabs imported increased, while the number of cold rolled sheets imported decreased.
The Commerce Department also reported that January steel imports fell 15.7% from 2.607 million metric tons in December because the decline from December to January reflected fewer imports, namely from China, Korea, Venezuela, and Turkey. However, more steel was imported from Mexico and Canada.
