Low union membership means hard times ahead

Union membership was at an almost 20-year low in 2002, with membership dropping to 13.2% from 13.4% in 2001, stated the Labor Department in its latest report.

In 1983, when records were started, 20.1% of the US workforce belonged to a union. The annual rate has never increased during that time.

Weaker union membership numbers are grim news for the entire nation, said John Sweeney, president of the AFL-CIO. Unions increase productivity, economic stability, and workers’ economic status, he said.

Approximately 1.9 million jobs have been cut at US factories in the last two years. The AFL-CIO’s industrial unions say the job losses are at a critical level, and they have joined forces to increase their political and lobbying influence.
