IBM paves the way for a new generation

IBM is in the process of establishing several joint research centers at universities across the US to better educate tomorrow’s manufacturing workforce on the importance of supply chains, a move that will eventually improve its own operations.

Supply chain is the battlefront of the future, said Stu Reed, VP of the worldwide systems group at IBM. The key is, you’ve got to look at internal operations holistically, he said.

For Michigan State University’s Eli Broad College of Business, IBM will donate more than $500,000 worth of hardware, software, storage systems, and general expertise to create a supply chain laboratory. The company is currently negotiating similar package deals with other universities. Once established, the different labs will work together in a grid computing network that will enable graduate students and professors to work collaboratively on projects, including optimizing inventory and order-tracking systems.

As a result of its philanthropy, IBM stands to gain research results to apply toward its own operations and well-trained candidates for future employment. IBM has benefited greatly from improving its supplier relationships and having internal divisions work together better. In 2002, the company eliminated $5.3 billion from its own operating expenses by doing just that.
