During his keynote address on March 5 at National Manufacturing Week in Chicago, Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans asked US manufacturers what actions they need the government to take in supporting them through this difficult economic time.

Evans also addressed the hardships manufacturers are facing, including health care costs, international industrial trade tariffs, and tax cuts. He spoke of the resiliency of the American economy, having survived two world wars, a depression, and nine recessions, and he assured the audience the US will come out of this.

“That is why your agendais our agenda,” said Evans, adding that he and President Bush are focused on manufacturing. “Manufacturing is more than just an engine for growth. It is about research and innovation, higher incomes, and quality of life improvements for all Americans. US manufacturing industries account for about two-thirds of private research and development expenditures, our competitive edge in the global economy, and a strong national defense.”

Evans was joined by Jerry Jasinowski, president of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). Jasinowski introduced the NAM’s new growth and manufacturing renewal strategy, which consists of focusing on manufacturing excellence on the factory floor, creating a stronger economic growth program, and ensuring there is a level playing field for US manufacturers in the global arena.
