Chicago’s purchasing managers index (PMI) dropped below 50 in February, a point at which the region’s manufacturing sector went from expansion to contraction, according to the National Association of Purchasing Management’s latest report.
The index slipped to 48.4 from 54.9 in January. Economists expected only a drop to 50.7, according to a Reuters poll. It seems as if the economy contracted in February and March, said David Rosenberg, chief North American economist at Merrill Lynch.
