A sign of the environmental times and the idea that there is no longer much by way of a preceived danger to US oil supplies appears to have led to the demise of GM's once celebrated electric vehicle.
According to the Seattle Times, vehicles lined up in a courdened-off area near a freight rail linesuggest "the car of the future" is now a car of the past.
Reports say that GM is taking the cars off the road when leases expire because it can no longer supply parts to repair them. A GM spokesman attributed the demise of the EV1 to its limited range (less than 100 miles); the length of time to recharge; and the fact that recharging systems in Arizona or California never materialized.
The cars are being shipped to museums and universities or being cannibalized for parts.
