EXPORTS: Commerce Department introduces plan to remove export obstacles

...and trade barriers to come down

Because of growing industry concerns over foreign standards and technical regulation issues, the Commerce Department announced the Standards Initiative, an eight-point strategy to help break down trade barriers and other obstacles to expanding exports. Some of the major road blocks to achieving free trade include divergent standards, redundant testing and compliance procedures, and unilateral and non-transparent standard-setting exercises, affecting approximately 80% of world commodity trade.

The Standards Initiative was developed to level the playing field for global trade. The eight strategic points offered in the initiative are: to develop a commerce global standards activity assessment; to reinforce expertise in key markets; to devise an effective training and outreach program; to create a best practices database; to expand the early warning system; to partner with the President’s export council on standards leadership; to reach out to US Industry; and to appoint a liaison at the International Trade Administration.

“The Bush administration remains committed to promoting competition and opening new markets for US goods,” said Donald Evans, Secretary of Commerce. “Standards and testing are key to our international competitiveness. But more and more we are hearing that foreign standards and testing requirements are keeping our products out of foreign markets. This is the wrong approach that reduces efficiencies, limits competition, and increases prices for consumer goods.”
