Zippo lights up another

Zippo Manufacturing Co. produced the 400 millionth lighter in its 71-year history at 8:15 am, September 3

Zippo Manufacturing Co. produced the 400 millionth lighter in its 71-year history at 8:15 am, September 3, at the company’s manufacturing plant in Bradford, PA. The milestone lighter, which was a deep carved, high polish Armor lighter marked with the production date and time, will be on permanent display in the company’s museum in the Zippo/Case Visitors Center.

“Reaching this historic milestone is a tribute to the international aura of the brand, the quality of the product we produce, and the dedication and support of our employees and the whole town of Bradford,” said George Duke, Zippo Manufacturing Co. chairman of the board and third-generation owner. “This is truly a day of celebration for our company and Zippo collectors and enthusiasts around the world.”

Zippo Manufacturing Co. was founded in the fall of 1932 by George G. Blaisdell in Bradford and maintains its sole manufacturing operation in the northwestern Pennsylvania town. With the exception of improvements to the flint wheel and modifications in case finishes, the product remains unchanged. The previous Zippo manufacturing milestone—its 300 millionth lighter—was produced seven years ago, in April 1996.
