Flexsys, a chemical supplier to the rubber processing industry, announced its intention to cease production of rubber chemicals at its Nitro, WV, location.
Production at the facility is expected to cease by the end of the first quarter of 2004. In addition to the elimination of 50 positions announced within the last year, the closure will ultimately affect the remaining 155 employees. This closure is subject to final negotiations with the United Steel Workers Union.
Flexsys is a joint venture between St. Louis, MO-based chemical company Solutia and Dutch chemical company Akzo Nobel, and manufactures rubber additives, antioxidants, antiozonants and other chemicals at the plant.
Ownership of the site and remaining facilities will revert to Solutia by mid-2005.
