The U.S. Department of Labor reported today that overall initial unemployment claims fell last week, and fewer manufacturing layoffs were reported in several states.
The number of first-time filings was 386,000 for the week ending October 25, a drop of 5,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 391,000.
According the same report, several states had a decrease in initial claims for the week ending October 18, due to fewer layoffs in the manufacturing sector. Those states included Illinois, Texas, Kansas, Florida and Minnesota.
The current unemployment rate, for September, released earlier this month by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, is 6.1 percent.
