Durable goods orders, shipments and inventories up

New orders for durable goods in October were up 3.3 percent from September, while shipments and inventories also showed gains, according to a report from the US Department of Commerce released today.

New orders for manufactured durable goods in October, up five of the last six months, increased $5.9 billion or 3.3 percent to $184.5 billion. This followed a 2.1 percent September increase. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 2.4 percent. Excluding defense, new orders increased 2.3 percent. Year-to-date, new orders for 2003 were 1.6 percent above the same period a year ago. Transportation equipment had the largest increase, $2.8 billion or 5.5 percent to $54.2 billion.

Shipments of manufactured durable goods in October, up five of the last six months, increased $1.0 billion or 0.6 percent to $183.3 billion. This followed a 2.9 percent September increase. Year-to-date, shipments for 2003 were 0.2 percent below the same period a year ago. Computers and electronic products, up five consecutive months, had the largest increase, $1.0 billion or 2.8 percent to $36.6 billion, led by semiconductors, which increased by $0.7 billion.

Inventories of manufactured durable goods in October increased $0.6 billion or 0.2 percent to $262.4 billion. This followed a 0.5 percent September decrease. October was up following nine consecutive monthly decreases. Transportation equipment had the largest increase, $0.4 billion or 0.5 percent to $67.6 billion. This followed four consecutive monthly decreases.
