Initial unemployment claims, layoffs decrease

According to a report released today by the US Department of Labor, initial jobless claims dropped last week, bolstered by reports of decreased layoffs in the manufacturing, textile and construction industries.

The number of first-time unemployment filings was 351,000 for the week ending November 22, a decrease of 11,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 362,000.

According the same report, several states had decreases in initial claims for the week ending November 15, due in part to decreased layoffs in the manufacturing sector, including California, Texas, Illinois, Florida, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Minnesota, Florida, Illinois and Wisconsin reported decreased layoffs in the construction industry, while North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Alabama reported fewer layoffs in the textile industry.

The current unemployment rate, released this month by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, is six percent.
