Tyson foods announced the closing of two meat-processing plants, while 3M and Otis Elevator also announced impending layoffs, affecting more than 1,000 workers combined.
Arkansas-based Tyson Foods said Thursday that it would close two plants in New Hampshire and Maine, affecting about 720 workers, as of February 2004. The production of the plants will be moved to plants in Iowa, Texas, New York, and other states.
Maplewood, MN-based 3M announced Friday that it would cut 125 jobs by the end of January 2004, citing weak domestic demand for its adhesive, tape and sandpaper products.
Farmington, CT-based Otis Elevator announced Thursday that it planned to end its manufacturing operations at its Bloomington, IN, plant by the end of next year, which will eliminate about 165 jobs. The company cited a shift of high-rise elevator business to Asia.
