Initial unemployment filings declined during the week ending December 13, according to a report released by the US Department of Labor today.
The figures suggested that layoffs during the holiday season may not hit workers quite as hard as initially feared.
The number of first-time unemployment filings was 353,000 for the week ending December 13, an decrease of 22,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 375,000.
According the same report, several states had decreases in initial claims for the week ending December 6, due in part to decreased layoffs in the manufacturing sector, including Texas and Wisconsin. However, claims increased in several individual states that week due in part to manufacturing or textile layoffs, including Mississippi, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.
The current unemployment rate, released this month by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, is 5.9 percent.
