There were 342,000 first-time unemployment filings for the week ending January 24, down 1,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 343,000, the US Department of Labor reported today.
According the same report, several states had decreases in initial claims for the week ending January 17, due in part to decreased layoffs in the manufacturing sector, including Georgia, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Illinois, Virginia, New Jersey, Kansas and Texas. However, claims increased in Florida that week, due in part to manufacturing layoffs.
The current unemployment rate, released earlier this month by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, is 5.7 percent.
