Metropolitan-area manufacturing employment down in 2003

Manufacturing remained the weakest industry in metropolitan areas in 2003, with 208 of 272 US metropolitan areas experiencing employment losses over the year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the US Department of Labor reported today.

Among the 272 US metropolitan areas for which over-the-year comparisons could be made, 139 reported decreases in all non-farm employment, 122 recorded increases, and 11 had no change.

The largest over-the-year non-farm employment declines were posted in Boston, MA-NH (-34,400), San Jose, CA (-30,900), Chicago, IL (-22,100), Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (-21,300), Detroit, MI (-18,900), and Portland-Vancouver, OR-WA (-11,800).

The largest over-the-year non-farm employment increases were reported in Atlanta, GA (+67,900), Phoenix-Mesa, AZ (+39,800), Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV (+38,500), Las Vegas, NV-AZ (+33,600), Orlando, FL (+23,200), and Sarasota-Bradenton, FL (+15,800).
