New orders, shipments up slightly

New orders for manufactured goods in December increased $3.7 billion, or 1.1 percent, to $342.4 billion, the US Department of Commerce’s Census Bureau reported today.
This was the highest level since December 2000, and followed a 0.9 percent November decrease. Year to date, new orders for 2003 were 3.9 percent above the same period a year ago.
Shipments, up four consecutive months, increased $5.1 billion, or 1.5 percent, to $346.5 billion. This was the highest level since February 2001, and followed a 0.5 percent November increase. Year to date, shipments for 2003 were 2.7 percent above the same period a year ago.
