356,000 people filed first-time unemployment claims for the week ending January 31, up 17,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 339,000, the US Department of Labor reported today.
According the same report, several states had decreases in initial claims for the previous week ending January 24, due in part to decreased layoffs in the manufacturing sector, including Florida, South Carolina, Virginia, Illinois, New Jersey and Texas. However, claims increased in Wisconsin that week, due in part to manufacturing layoffs.
The current unemployment rate, released last month by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, is 5.7 percent.
