Employment rose in January, but the unemployment rate, at 5.6 percent, was little changed from December’s unemployment rate of 5.7 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the US Department of Labor reported today.
Nonfarm payroll employment increased by 112,000 jobs. Manufacturing employment continued to trend down, but the rate of job loss has moderated in recent months, according to the report.
Manufacturing employment had a loss of 11,000 jobs. Small job losses continued throughout most of nondurable goods. Employment in durable goods manufacturing was about unchanged in January. The durable goods sector of wholesale trade continued to trend up; since October the industry has added 28,000 jobs.
