General Motors announced today that it was recalling 1.8 million cars due to an ignition-system problem that could potentially start a fire.
GM, the world’s largest automaker, said that it received 80 reported incidents of heat buildup and smoldering or burning components due to the high flow of electrical current through the ignition systems of certain models of GM cars. The problem has not caused any injuries or fatalities.
The GM models to be recalled include some Pontiac Sunfires built between 1997 and 2001, some 1998- to 2001-model Chevrolet Cavaliers, as well as several others. 1.4 million of the 1.8 million cars were sold in the United States, with the rest sold in other countries.
In January, GM announced a separate recall of 824,000 GM cars manufactured in 1996 and 1997 due to potential problems with their power-steering systems.
