Nationwide first-time unemployment claims for the week ending February 14 dropped to 344,000, down 24,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 368,000, the US Department of Labor reported today.
It is the largest decline in first-time filings since November 2003.
According the same report, some states had decreases in initial claims for the week ending February 7, due in part to decreased manufacturing layoffs, including Wisconsin and Maryland. However, claims increased in Florida, Virginia, Texas and South Carolina that week, due in part to increased manufacturing layoffs.
The current unemployment rate is 5.6 percent, released earlier this month by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
