Toyota bumps Ford to number three

Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota surpassed Dearborn, MI-based automaker Ford as the number-two automaker in the world, just behind Detroit, MI-based giant General Motors.

Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota surpassed Dearborn, MI-based automaker Ford as the number-two automaker in the world, just behind Detroit, MI-based giant General Motors.

Toyota and Ford both released their 2003 sales figures in January. Toyota reported 6.78 million vehicles sold, up from 6.17 million in 2002—its best sales year in its 46-year history. Ford reported 6.72 million cars sold, down from 6.97 million the previous year. General Motors sold 8.6 million vehicles last year.

Restructuring has hit Ford hard in recent years. The company has stated that some 35,000 Ford jobs have been or will be cut, and several plants closed, due to the company’s restructuring by 2005. Most recently, Ford announced the layoffs of 1,000 workers at a St. Louis, MO-area plant in January. Ford also took a $1.6 billion charge recently to assume more of the retirement healthcare liability costs of its supplier and former auto parts unit, Dearborn, MI-based Visteon Corp.

Toyota employs more than 31,000 workers in North America, and manufactured some 1.28 million cars and 1.11 million engines in North America in 2003. “This past year was one of incredible growth for Toyota in our manufacturing operations,” said Atsushi Niimi, president and CEO of Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America, in a statement. “As we expand, we will keep our focus on improving quality in every vehicle every day.”

Toyota also operates manufacturing plants in

Japan, Mexico and several other countries.
