GM recalls 2.4 million vehicles

General Motors, on the heels of a massive January 824,000-car recall, announced in February that it was recalling 1.8 million cars due to a problem with their ignition system that could potentially start fires, as well as 636,000 SUVs due to a defective part.

General Motors, on the heels of a massive January 824,000-car recall, announced in February that it was recalling 1.8 million cars due to a problem with their ignition system that could potentially start fires, as well as 636,000 SUVs due to a defective part.

GM, the world’s largest automaker, said that it received 80 reported incidents of heat buildup and smoldering or burning components due to the high flow of electrical current through the ignition systems of certain models of GM cars. The problem has not caused any injuries or fatalities.

The GM models to be recalled include some Pontiac Sunfires built between 1997 and 2001, some 1998- to 2001-model Chevrolet Cavaliers, as well as several others.

Four days later, GM recalled 636,000 SUVs due to a faulty windshield-wiper module allowing leaks that damaged electronics and had led to minor accidents.

Just one month earlier, in January, GM announced a recall of 824,000 cars manufactured in 1996 and 1997 due to potential power-steering problems.

GM’s recalls come just after the company announced a decline in sales in 2003. Rival automakers Toyota, BMW, Honda and others reported record sales for last year.
