375,000 workers’ benefits run out

According to a study released by the nonpartisan Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, 375,000 workers’ unemployment benefits ran out at the end of January, with those workers having no job or further access to government aid.

A total of nearly two million workers’ unemployment benefits will run out in six months, says the study, with the ending of the federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation program. The program had extended workers’ unemployment benefits for an additional 13 weeks. The Bush administration and the US Congress declined to extend the program, which ended in December.

According to figures from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than two million jobs have been lost in the manufacturing sector alone—the majority of jobs lost nationwide—since President George W. Bush took office.

“Jobs are being created,” US Press Secretary Scott McClellan said in a December press briefing. “There is more that we need to do to create an even more robust environment. That’s where the President’s focus is. We did extend unemployment benefits three times previously.”

The manufacturing sector cut jobs for the 42nd month in a row in December, according to employment figures from the US Department of Labor.
