Mass layoffs up in January; 35 percent in manufacturing

There were 2,428 mass layoff actions by employers in January, 35 percent of which were in the manufacturing sector, according to a report released today by the US Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The manufacturing sector also recorded 37 percent of all initial employment claims filed in January. A year ago, manufacturing reported 36 percent of mass layoff events and 40 percent of initial claims. The number of manufacturing claimants was highest in the transportation equipment sector (15,107, mostly automotive-related) and in the food processing sector (11,083).
The total number of workers involved in all January layoff events totaled 239,454. Both the number of layoff events and initial claims were higher than a year ago.
