The US Department of Commerce’s Census Bureau today reported decreases in new orders and shipments of manufactured durable goods in January.
Unfilled orders of manufactured durable goods were also reported down, while inventories increased.
New orders in January decreased $3.2 billion, or 1.8 percent, to $181 billion, following a 1.6 percent December increase. A sharp fall in demand for automobiles and aircraft contributed to the decrease.
Shipments last month decreased $0.1 billion to $188.1 billion. This followed a 2.2 percent increase in December.
Unfilled orders in January, down following five consecutive increases, decreased $0.7 billion, or 0.1 percent, to $505.2 billion. This followed a 0.4 percent increase in December. Inventories of manufactured durable goods in January, up three of the last four months, increased $0.2 billion, or 0.1 percent, to $263.0 billion, after a 0.5 percent December increase.
