After an impressive decrease for the week ending February 14, initial unemployment claims rose again for the week ending February 21.
First-time unemployment claims for the week ending February 21 dropped to 350,000, up 6,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 344,000, the US Department of Labor reported today.
The increase follows the largest decline in initial filings since November 2003 for the week ending February 14, which had reported a drop of 24,000.
As a result, some states had decreases in initial claims for the week ending February 14, due in part to decreased manufacturing layoffs in South Carolina, Virginia, Minnesota, Kansas, Florida, Wisconsin and Texas.
The current overall unemployment rate is 5.6 percent, released this month by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
