Poway, CA-based computer manufacturer Gateway will cut another 1,000 workers in the next few months, on top of about 900 layoffs that have occurred at the company since December.
In January, Gateway announced plans to acquire Irvine, CA-based computer maker eMachines for about $235 million in cash and stock. Chief financial officer Rod Sherwood said, during a presentation at a semiconductor and systems conference yesterday, that Gateway will cut employee levels down to the mid-5,000 range once the merger is completed.
The company currently has about 6,500 employees, and had about 7,400 in December 2003.
