A total of 21,000 jobs were added nationwide in nonfarm employment in February, while manufacturing employment was unchanged, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the US Department of Labor reported today.
The overall unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.6 percent.
Though manufacturing employment was static in February, the overall pace of job losses in the sector has slowed somewhat in recent months, said the report. Since August, job losses in manufacturing have averaged 16,000 a month, compared with an average loss of 62,000 for the first eight months of 2003. In February, a small employment gain in durable-goods manufacturing was offset by a continuing decline in nondurable goods.
The total number of unemployed persons nationwide last month was 8.2 million.
