The US Federal Reserve reported today that manufacturing output rose by one percent in February, part of a larger-than-expected 0.7 percent increase in production by industry as a whole.
The manufacturing output gain was spread across several manufacturing sectors, which bodes well for a recovery in the troubled manufacturing sector. Durable goods production rose one percent overall , with machinery manufacturing output growing 1.7 percent, computer and office equipment production growing by 2.1 percent, and motor vehicles and parts output rising 1.6 percent last month.
Nondurable goods production was up 0.8 percent across multiple sectors, including petroleum, coal, plastics and rubber products, all of which had an output increase of one percent or more. Paper production rose 0.9 percent and food, beverage and tobacco production increased by 0.7 percent in February.
