First-time jobless claims hit three-year low

Initial unemployment filings dropped to 336,000 for the week ending March 13, down 6,000 from the previous week’s revised figure, and the lowest level ever during the Bush administration, reported the US Department of Labor today.

The last time initial jobless claims hit such a low level was the week ending January 13, 2001, one week before President George W. Bush took office.

However, in the same report, several states reported an increase in manufacturing sector layoffs for the previous week ending March 6, including Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, Georgia and Minnesota.

The current overall unemployment rate is 5.6 percent, released earlier this month by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
