Chrysler, Hyundai, and Mitsubishi to build joint engine

Daimler Chrysler AG, Hyundai Motor Company, and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announced the establishment of a joint venture company that will be responsible for the design, development, and engineering of a new series of in-line four-cylinder gasoline engines.

The Global Engine Alliance LLC will create these engines using the resources of all three companies. In the future, these engines will be used in new Chrysler Group, Mitsubishi Motors, and Hyundai Motor models. The project may be indicative of a trend toward resource pooling between competing companies.

The engine will be at the cutting edge of today’s technology, with displacements of 1.8, 2.0, and 2.4 liters in the range of 120 and 165 horsepower. The superior aluminum design will improve both fuel efficiency and performance.

Global Engine Alliance will be owned equally by the three companies, and its operations will be located in the US. Hyundai has been given the lead responsibility for implementing the decisions made by the joint venture company during the design, development, and engineering stages. Operations of Global Engine Alliance will begin this month. Test-run production of the engines by Hyundai is likely to begin by March 2004, with follow-up production to begin the following year at Chrysler and Mitsubishi plants. The three companies also plan to investigate further opportunities in the joint production of an engine for the NAFTA region.
