Long-awaited manufacturing czar nominated

The Bush administration nominated Al Frink, owner of Santa Ana, CA-based carpet manufacturer Fabrica International, for assistant commerce secretary of manufacturing and services.

The Bush administration nominated Al Frink, owner of Santa Ana, CA-based carpet manufacturer Fabrica International, for assistant commerce secretary of manufacturing and services.

The Ňmanufacturing czarÓ nomination has been long awaited by those in the manufacturing sector since Bush brought it up in a Labor Day speech in Ohio last year. ItŐs hoped that the focused post will help stem the tide of manufacturing job losses. About three million manufacturing jobs have been lost since President Bush took office in January 2001.

The nomination comes after the administrationŐs first choice for the post, Anthony Raimondo, CEO of Columbus, NE-based Behlen Manufacturing, withdrew himself from nomination after the presidential campaign of US Senator John Kerry (D-MA) pointed out that Raimondo had laid off 75 workers after announcing the construction of a manufacturing plant in China.

FrinkŐs company, Fabrica International, has been in business since 1974 and employs more than 400 people. Frink has served as a member of the US Department of CommerceŐs ExporterŐs Textile Advisory Committee.

ŇAlŐs extensive background as a manufacturer makes him a great candidate to serve because he has walked in their shoes and knows firsthand the barriers that are challenging American manufacturers,Ó said US Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans in a statement.
