Commerce report: New orders, shipments up

New orders placed with factories in March for manufactured goods totaled $14.9 billion, up 4.3 percent from February, the US Department of Commerce reported today—the largest increase since July 2002, and a hopeful sign of the manufacturing sector’s ongoing economic recovery.

The figure follows February’s 1.1 percent increase. Contributing to the increase in new orders was stronger demand for automobiles, machinery, computer equipment, food, and clothing, among other goods.

Shipments of manufactured durable goods in March, up six of the last seven months, increased $7.6 billion, or four percent, to $196.4 billion. Shipments of manufactured nondurable goods, up six of the last seven months, increased $5.6 billion, or 3.5 percent, to $165 billion.
