The Timken Company, the Canton, OH-based bearing and alloy steel supplier, was awarded its second delivery order, for $2.69 million, under an existing $20 million US Air Force contract for ball-bearing development.
The new order focuses on the development of advanced engineered surfaces for bearings used in current and next generation gas-turbine aircraft engines. Timken will develop special surface coatings to reduce bearing friction and improve resistance to wear and corrosion.
In 2003, Timken received its first order of $3.27 million for advanced bearing materials development. The overall $20 million in federal funding is part of a joint initiative between the US Department of Defense, the US Department of Energy, NASA and the US aerospace industry.
Timken recorded 2003 sales of $3.8 billion and employs approximately 26,000.
