Manufacturing productivity up

The US Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics today released preliminary productivity data for the first quarter of 2004, reporting that productivity rose in manufacturing overall, with rises in both durable goods manufacturing and in nondurable goods manufacturing.
Productivity increased 3.1 percent in manufacturing in the first quarter, and rose 5.9 percent in durable goods manufacturing, a significant sign of growth in that sector. In nondurable goods manufacturing, productivity rose 0.1 percent.
In the nonfarm business sector overall, productivity rose 3.5 percent for the first quarter.
