Levi Strauss & Co. has announced that it is exploring the sale of its Dockers clothing business. After years of sliding sales company wide, Levi Strauss hopes to reduce a substantial amount of debt and be better able to revamp the Levi’s brand by letting go of the Dockers business.
The Dockers brand is one of the world’s largest apparel brands, generating annual worldwide revenue of approximately $1.4 billion. The introduction of the Dockers brand in 1986 created a new category in casual clothing fueling the “business casual” revolution in the 1990s.
However, Dockers sales have hit a slump recently. Tougher competition from value-conscious brands as well as a decline in overall spending on casual clothing is to blame according to company officials.
