Lost luggage could soon be a thing of the past at Jacksonville International Airport, which plans to introduce a baggage tracking system using radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags, at an estimated cost of up to $1 million.
Airport officials hope the installation will be complete by this fall, in time for the huge influx of Super Bowl visitors in February 2005.
RFID tags contain microchips that store identification data for each piece of luggage. As the bags move along conveyor belts, their RFID tags are read by electronic scanners with a reported accuracy rate of 99 percent, a 14 percent improvement over the current barcode-based system.
