Maxim drug combo shows promise

Maxim Pharmaceuticals claims a combination of its Ceplene drug plus interleukin-2 prevented acute myeloid leukemia relapse in an end-stage clinical trial.

Maxim Pharmaceuticals claims a combination of its Ceplene drug plus interleukin-2 prevented acute myeloid leukemia relapse in an end-stage clinical trial. After the announcement, Maxim’s stock climbed by more than a dollar in Wednesday afternoon trading to a high of $10.45 per share.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most common form of leukemia in adults. AML patients are usually treated with chemotherapy, but the majority often suffer a relapse. After a relapse, the outlook is often grim, with few long-term survivors.

In Maxim's Phase 3 trial, 320 AML patients in complete remission in Europe, North America, Israel, New Zealand, and Australia were randomly selected to receive Ceplene plus interleukin-2 or no treatment at all for at least three years. Patients treated with Ceplene and IL-2 had a statistically significant improvement of leukemia-free survival compared to patients who received no treatment at all. Additional details are slated to be presented at upcoming meetings.
