Unemployment rates dropped in 29 states in April

Unemployment rates declined in more than half the states in April, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the US Department of Labor reported today.

In April, North Dakota and South Dakota again reported the lowest unemployment rates, 2.7 and 2.8 percent, respectively. Another nine states recorded rates below four percent. The highest jobless rates were reported in the District of Columbia, 7.3 percent, and Alaska, 7.1 percent. Eight additional states posted rates of 6.0 percent or higher in April.

Compared with March, unemployment rates were lower in 29 states, higher in 14 states and the District of Columbia, and unchanged in seven states. The largest over-the-month unemployment rate decreases were reported in Michigan (-0.8 percentage point), Minnesota (-0.7 point), and Maine (-0.6 point). Another three states (Oregon, South Dakota and Wisconsin) had decreases of 0.5 percentage point each. Mississippi recorded the largest monthly rate increase (+0.8 percentage point), followed by Arizona (+0.5 point).
