Medtronic earnings, sales rise

Minneapolis, MN-based medical equipment maker Medtronic reported earnings of $1.96 billion on sales of $9 billion in the fiscal year of 2004, compared with $1.6 billion on sales of $7.7 billion last year.
The company also reported fourth-quarter net income of $568.9 million compared with $487.1 million a year ago. The company reported fourth-quarter sales of nearly $2.7 billion, up 24 percent from $2.1 billion a year ago.
Medtronic’s sales of implantable cardiac defibrillators jumped 34 percent worldwide during the fourth quarter. A recent study, which showed that the defibrillators significantly reduced fatalities in patients with mild heart disease, helped drive sales.
