Manufacturing job growth weak in 2003, says report

Manufacturing was the weakest industry for job growth in 2003, with 175 of 274 metropolitan areas posting employment losses over the year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the US Department of Labor reported today.

Employment growth was most widespread in education and health services, with 215 of 274 metropolitan areas experiencing over-the-year employment gains in this industry sector. Many areas also experienced employment growth in leisure and hospitality; professional and business services; trade, transportation, and utilities; and financial activities.

Among the 274 metropolitan areas for which May nonfarm payroll data were available, 177 posted over-the-year increases in employment, 90 posted decreases, and 7 had no change.

The largest over-the-year employment increases were recorded in Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV (+79,300 jobs), Phoenix-Mesa, AZ (+44,100), Las Vegas, NV-AZ (+38,100), Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL (+22,000), Riverside-San Bernardino, CA (+21,700), and New York, NY (+21,200).

The largest over-the-year employment decreases were reported in Detroit, MI (-23,400 jobs), Boston, MA-NH (-17,900), San Jose, CA (-14,900), Toledo, OH (-9,200), and San Francisco, CA (-9,100).
