First-time unemployment filings drop again

In a continuing decline, initial unemployment filings dropped 4,000, to 333,000, for the week ending August 7, the US Department of Labor reported today.

Last week, filings dropped by 11,000, which is seen as a hopeful sign for the economy as a whole.

Several states, including Michigan, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Illinois and Florida, reported a drop in manufacturing-sector layoffs for the previous week ending July 31. For the second week in a row, not a single state reported a rise in layoffs.

The current overall unemployment rate is 5.5 percent, reported earlier this month by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
